Women in the Industry (A Series): The Best Action Anime/Manga Written By Women

In one way or another, the anime industry can be considered to be dominated by men. After all, women in this field are stereotyped and are said to only focus on romance and slice-of-life genres. That couldn't be farther from the truth, though. Here are some of the most action-packed manga/anime shows that were authored by women:

Dorohedoro

Dorohedoro is a twisted story about Nikaido, a feisty owner of a gyoza restaurant, and her friend Caiman, a lizard-headed man with amnesia. In the course of their friendship, they've fought numerous battles while trying to find the person who stole Caiman's memories. Many of their opponents use magic, but the Nikaido-Caiman tandem is formidable enough to hold their own with just their fists and legs (and Caiman's teeth).

This anime was first published as a manga, which was written by Q Hayashida. She was also the author of several other manga series.

D.Gray Man

Allen Walker is a young man who kills demons (akuma) using his cursed left arm and eye. He belongs to a special group of humans who can use Innocence, which can harm and slay demons and prevent them from wreaking havoc. The whole anime is pretty long; the first season alone has 103 episodes, while the second has 13. Every arc is filled with action and danger, but as Allen and his friends are willing to risk their lives to save other people.

D.Gray Man is one of the highest-rated shows on MyAnimeList, and it was written by Hoshino Katsura. Although it's on a hiatus, the manga is still ongoing.

Deadman Wonderland

If you think Dorohedoro is twisted already, wait until you hear about Deadman Wonderland. This series chronicles the life of Ganta, a young student who was framed for the murder of his entire class and was later sent to Deadman Wonderland, a theme park run by prisoners like him. He has no will to live until he meets Shiro, an albino girl who inspired her to live. Now his goal is to stay alive until he finds out what really happened to his classmates.

Deadman Wonderland was written by a man-and-woman team, Kondou Kazuma and Kataoka Jinsei. Both of them were pretty successful in their careers. Kataoka wrote other manga series, and one of them, Eureka Seven, also got an anime adaptation.

Kimetsu no Yaiba

One day after coming back home from selling coal, Tanjiro sees his whole family getting brutally massacred by demons. The only surviving member was his little sister, Nezuko. But in a wild twist of fate, Nezuko was also turned into a demon. Tanjiro's long adventures of being a demon slayer started, and his main goal is to lead other demons to their resting place while finding a way to turn Nezuko back to being human.

Undoubtedly one of the best-selling manga series of all time, Kimetsu no Yaiba (also known as Demon Slayer) sold over 150 million copies worldwide. Its movie sequel to the first season, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, took the whole world by storm and has quickly rose to become the highest-grossing anime film of all time. Its author, Gotouge Koyoharu, maintains public anonymity, but many people say that they're a woman.

Inuyasha

Possibly one of the most famous anime shows in the 1990s, Inuyasha is also quite probably among the first series to delve deep into the isekai trope. Inuyasha is the name of the main character of the show, and he is a half-human and half-demon who is quite feared in his era. By a twist of fate, he meets Kagome, a human from the modern times, who happens to be the reincarnation of his old human lover, Kikiyo. Kagome and Inuyasha's adventures are always dangerous, but they manage to get by, thanks to the friends who always got their backs.

Inuyasha was written by the ever-prolific Takahashi Rumiko. The lady also wrote several other successful shows, including Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2, which were both published before Inuyasha.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Edward Elric lost an arm and a leg after a terrible accident in his alchemy. His brother Al, who helped him that time, was even more affected and lost his whole body. The lesson that they learned was alchemy, no matter how powerful it is, can never bring a dead person back to life. Even so, they started their journey to find a way to restore their bodies to their previous conditions.

Comfortably sitting at the top of MyAnimeList's highest-rated anime shows, Fullmetal Alchemist has maintained its number one spot for many, many years now. It's action-packed episodes and intriguing story line are just two of the reasons people love this anime so much. It was Arakawa Hiromu's most successful work. She is also the author of Gin no Saji and Arslan Senki, both series were popular enough to be adapted into anime. #
